Reading

Our school promotes reading for pleasure. Children are regularly given sessions for independent and paired reading. Upper school children are trained to be reading buddies for the younger children who need additional support.

In our school Library there are a graded set of books for use as children progress in their reading ability and comprehension level. There is also fiction and non-fiction books for the children to choose books from when they can access this level of reading. Upper school children are trained to be Librarians and they support the children with choosing appropriate books, monitor signing in and out of books, promote fiction and non-fiction books each month to the children and keep the Library organised along with the English coordinator.

In class the children take part in a guided reading group. They regularly read a range of different genres and discuss the text they have read. The children are taught how to answer a range of comprehension questions by locating information in a text, giving their opinions on the text, using inference skills to work out what is happening and to discuss the author's choice of vocabulary. If you would like more information about the comprehension questions contact the class teacher.
